| Georg Heyde & Company was the largest and most well known of the German metal Toy Soldier makers. Georg Heyde began making figures as early as the 1830's, while most experts recognize 1872 (oldest catalog date available) as the first official year of business for the company. At first Heyde figures competed against Mignot solid metal toy soldiers made in France, and then after World War I, Heyde's toy soldiers would face a new challenge from William Britain's hollow cast figures. While W. Britain and Mignot toy soldier sets featured their own national forces, G. Heyde recognized that every army needs an enemy to fight against and that people would buy more of his figures, in order to reenact whole battles. By the early 1900's G. Heyde & Co. had become the world's largest toy soldier maker. G. Heyde was able to dominate the world toy soldier market, in part because of the diverse nationality and the various scale sizes of his figures, which allowed Heyde play sets to cover every price range. Heyde was able to create so many different nationalities in various poses, because he soldered plug head figures and then painted them in various uniforms in order to create play sets for every imaginable event in world history. You will find Heyde sets covering every major conflict, from Ancient Punic Wars to more modern World Wars. In fact the horrors of World War II would bring about the destruction of the Heyde company. While the Georg Heyde & Company may not have survived the War, there are still fine examples of his wonderful toy soldiers waiting to be admired and played with by collectors. |
