- Each Zinnfiguren manufacturer, know as an
Editor uses traditional craftsmanship to hand make
each individual flat tin figure. First a Designer makes a historically
detailed drawing of the figure. Then an Master Engraver carves
the image into two pieces of slate, capturing both the front
and back sides. A composition of tin, which has not changed since
the early 18th century, is poured into the slate mold, producing
a wonderful two-dimensional miniature sculpture. These miniature
works of art, called Zinnfiguren in Europe and referred to as
Flats in America and England, are truly amazing.

- 1. Unpainted- silvery tin finish:
Many collectors favor the silver like qualities of unpainted
Zinnfiguren/Flats. Shiny toy soldiers marching into battle, in
all their wonderful sculpted detail. Other collectors prefer
painting their own toy soldiers. Many
of the figures may be painted to represent different nations
and historical periods due to the use of similar style uniforms
and equipment. A set of Napoleonic French Hussars, can be painted
wearing the uniforms of different nations, even their foe the
British.

- 2. Standard- Toy Soldier Finish:
A good basic "Toy Soldier" painting quality, very much
like the classic Britain toy soldier. The figure's face, uniform
and equipment is painted, with solid opaque colors, with little
or no shadowing. Most factory painted
Heinrichsen Zinnfiguren/Flats have a Standard paint finish. A
Kilia Napoleonic Flat is pictured.
